TMJ Chiropractic

As one of Utah County's leading TMJ chiropractors, Dr. North has multiple dentists that refer patients to our office for TMJ care. Our TMJ care relieves pain of the jaw, by restoring proper range of motion to the jaw and gets to the cause of the TMJ pain, jaw "clicking", and headaches.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) can come from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the associated nerves, and from the jaw muscles. Dr. North focuses on the muscle imbalances and trigger points of these TMD related muscles. Especially the muscles related TMJ disc displacement.

Exam

We evaluate the gait of the jaw, improve its alignment, and remove trigger points of the jaw and the associated musculature of the head, neck, and face. Also, it should be noted that proper neck evaluation is critical to getting to the root of TMJ dysfunction. A thorough spinal examination relates to thorough care and achieving lasting corrective results for the jaw and headaches related to TMD.

Treatments

The treatments consist of gentle myofascial work aimed at correcting TMD, rather than using passive modalities that merely relieve symptoms. It is worth noting, that Dr. North does not perform any "cracking" type jaw adjustments.

Night Guards

Many patients need night guards and Dr. North supports this, when recommended by their dentist. Dr. North co-manages patient care with dentists. Since night guards are usually made for the patient with their jaw already out of alignment and with muscle imbalances present, the night guard may fit the teeth fine, but it may not feel comfortable to the jaw. Our solution is:

1) Before the patient buys a night guard, try our TMD chiropractic care 1st.

2) Then after 2-3 weeks of chiropractic care, we send the patient back to their dentist for the night guard & chances are it will work much better.
